Split tunneling on Windows: letting Russian websites and programs bypass the VPN

Setting up Hiddify on Windows: Russian websites go direct with the “Russia” region, and individual programs bypass the VPN with process name rules.

Split tunneling on Windows: letting Russian websites and programs bypass the VPN

Key points in a minute

  • In Hiddify, the “Russia (ru)” region sends Russian domains and IP addresses directly.
  • Individual programs can bypass the VPN with a process name rule — it works only in the “VPN” service mode.
  • In “Set system proxy” mode, only programs that respect the system proxy go through the VPN — mainly browsers.
  • Reconnect the VPN after changing the settings.

Service mode: VPN or system proxy

For Windows, your Byte VPN account recommends Hiddify. Its settings include a “Service mode” option, which determines which programs go through the VPN in the first place.

  • “VPN” — Hiddify creates a virtual network adapter, and traffic from all programs goes through it. This is TUN mode, and per-program rules work only in this mode.
  • “Set system proxy” — programs that respect the Windows system proxy go through the VPN. These are usually browsers, while many other apps connect directly.

Russian websites direct: the “Russia” region

The “Routing” section has a “Region” setting. Set it to “Russia (ru)” and Hiddify sends domains in the .ru zone and addresses from the Russian geosite and geoip lists directly. All other traffic goes through the VPN.

  • Go to “Settings” → “Routing” in Hiddify.
  • In the “Region” setting, choose “Russia (ru)” from the list.
  • Reconnect the VPN.

Letting individual programs bypass the VPN

If you need a specific program to always work without the VPN, add a routing rule based on its process name. These rules work only in the “VPN” service mode.

  • In the “Routing” section, open “Route rules” and select “Create new rule” to add one.
  • In the “Process names” field, enter the program’s name, for example app.exe. You can find it in Task Manager on the “Details” tab.
  • In the “Outbound if match” field, select “Direct” as the outbound.
  • Save the rule and reconnect the VPN.

If you only need the VPN for your browser

Sometimes it’s easier to do the opposite and send only your browser through the VPN. The “Set system proxy” mode works for this: browsers respect it, while many other programs connect directly.

Keep in mind that this way only traffic from programs that use the system proxy is protected. If you need protection for the whole computer, use the “VPN” mode with the “Russia” region.

How to check the result

Open a Russian website, such as your bank’s site or Gosuslugi (Russia’s public services portal), and make sure it works without errors. Then check your IP address on an IP check website based outside Russia: it should show the VPN server’s address.

If there’s no option for process rules, update Hiddify to the latest version from the project’s GitHub page or via the link in your Byte VPN account.

FAQ

How do I make Russian websites open without the VPN on Windows?

In Hiddify, open “Settings” → “Routing” and choose the “Russia (ru)” region. Russian domains and IP addresses will then go direct.

Can I exclude a specific program from the VPN?

Yes, with a process name routing rule that uses the “Direct” outbound. It works only in the “VPN” service mode.

What’s the difference between “VPN” mode and the system proxy?

“VPN” mode sends traffic from all programs through a virtual adapter. The system proxy is used only by programs that support it, most often browsers.
