Happ VPN: What It Is, How to Add a Subscription, and How to Fix Errors

Happ doesn't provide a connection on its own: it needs a subscription from a VPN service. Where to download the app, how to add a link on your phone, PC, and TV, and what common errors mean.

Happ VPN: What It Is, How to Add a Subscription, and How to Fix Errors

You are likely here for one of two reasons. Either a VPN service sent you a link and told you to "add it to Happ," or you installed Happ yourself, opened it, and saw a blank screen with no servers and no "connect" button. Both cases are normal. Happ is a client app, and it only starts working after you add a subscription to it.

Below, we explain where to download Happ, why it's so hard to find in the Russian App Store, how to add a subscription on your phone, PC, and TV, how to route banks and local websites around the VPN, and what "Timeout" and "Host not found" errors mean. The interface is described based on versions from late October 2026. Happ updates almost every week, so menu items might differ slightly.

Key points in a minute

  • Happ is a free app for connecting via VLESS and other protocols. It has no servers of its own, so you first need a subscription link from a VPN service.
  • You add a subscription using the "+" button on the main screen: from the clipboard, via QR code, or manually. To transfer it to a TV, use a five-digit code via tv.happ.su.
  • Happ is available for iPhone, Android, Windows, macOS, Linux, Android TV, and Apple TV. It was removed from the Russian App Store several times, and similar apps are released by other companies, so only use links from happ.su.
  • A "Timeout" error when adding a subscription means the server didn't respond within 9 seconds. Check your internet connection without the VPN and try updating again.
  • Happ only applies new routing rules after you reconnect.

What is Happ and why it doesn't work without a subscription

Happ is an app for connecting to proxy and VPN servers via VLESS (including Reality), VMess, Trojan, Shadowsocks, Socks, and Hysteria2. Under the hood, it uses Xray, an open-source core powering most VLESS clients.

Happ has no servers of its own. The developers state clearly on their official website that the app doesn't sell access or provide VPN services. Happ is like an email client: until you add an account, there won't be any emails. Instead of an email account, it uses a subscription—a link from a VPN service that Happ uses to download a list of servers and their settings. We explain how a subscription differs from a vless:// key and where to get one in our article on VLESS keys and subscriptions.

The app itself is free; the developers rely on donations. In the App Store description, they specifically warn about scammers selling the "official Happ VPN." There is no such product. If someone sells a subscription "from Happ," it's a third-party service exploiting a well-known name.

Where to download Happ and why it's missing from the Russian App Store

Official links for all versions are gathered at happ.su, and the new website address is happ.info. PC versions are stored in the developer's GitHub repository.

The App Store situation is complicated. In March 2026, Apple removed several VPN clients from the Russian store at the request of Roskomnadzor (Russia's communications regulator), including the main version of Happ. The developer brought the app back under different names, like Happ Plus and Happ Lite, but Apple removed those too. Happ Plus, for example, disappeared on June 24, as reported by iPhones.ru. Based on our checks on October 30, 2026, there are no Happ apps in the Russian App Store, though the main version is available in other countries' stores. We cover which iPhone clients you can install right now in our article on VPNs for iPhone.

If Happ is already on your iPhone, its removal from the store doesn't delete it. The app keeps working, but it won't update via a Russian account. Do not delete it to free up space, and turn off "Offload Unused Apps" in Settings → App Store. Otherwise, iOS might offload the rarely opened app on its own, and you won't be able to download it again from the Russian store.

How to add a subscription to Happ on your phone

The process is identical for iPhone and Android.

  1. Copy the full subscription link provided by your VPN service. It usually starts with https://. In the Byte VPN dashboard, for example, a link like https://bytestand.fun/subscription/… can be copied with one click.
  2. Open Happ and tap the "+" in the top right corner of the main screen.
  3. Select "Import from Clipboard". If you have the link as a QR code, select scan and point your camera. Your iPhone might ask for permission to let Happ paste from the clipboard: allow it.
  4. The subscription will appear on the main screen with a list of servers underneath. Select a server and tap the connect button.
  5. On the first connection, your phone will ask for permission to add a VPN configuration. Confirm this; otherwise, Happ won't be able to create the tunnel.

Sometimes, instead of a link, a service provides a button that opens Happ directly. This is a deep link: the app will automatically ask if you want to add the subscription. Links starting with happ://crypt are encrypted subscriptions. The server addresses are hidden, but otherwise, they work like regular ones.

How to update a subscription

Subscriptions update automatically at an interval set by the service. You can manually update the server list using the update button next to the subscription name or via its menu (three dots). You should do this if the service announces new servers, if locations disappear, or if the connection stops working, as server addresses may have changed.

How to choose a server

Next to each server, Happ displays the ping—the response time in milliseconds. Lower is better, but you usually won't notice a 20–30 ms difference on websites and videos. If you see a "timeout" or an error icon instead of numbers, that server is currently unreachable from your network. Just pick another one.

Happ on PC: Windows and macOS

The desktop version looks different from the mobile one: it's built on the Qt 6 framework, and the menu items have different names. The logic is the same: a subscription, a list of servers, and a connect button. We explain how to choose a PC client and how Windows differs from Mac in our article on VPNs for PC.

  1. Open the downloads page on happ.su and download the setup-Happ.x64.exe installer. For laptops with ARM processors, use setup-Happ.arm64.exe.
  2. Run the installer and allow it to make changes to your device. The Happ service, which handles the TUN mode, is installed alongside the program.
  3. Open Happ, add your subscription via the "+" icon from the clipboard, select a server, and connect.

Current versions don't run on Windows 7 and 8. The developers kept a separate build, 1.0.2, for older systems, but it hasn't been updated in a long time and might not work with new server settings.

Proxy or TUN: which mode to choose

Happ for PC has two connection modes. Proxy sets Happ as the system proxy: traffic from browsers and apps that respect Windows or macOS network settings will go through it. TUN creates a virtual network adapter, routing all computer traffic through the tunnel, including apps that ignore the system proxy. This usually applies to games and clients with their own network settings.

If you only need a VPN in your browser, Proxy is enough. If a specific program doesn't "see" the VPN, enable TUN. Reconnect after changing the mode: settings are not applied on the fly.

Happ on Mac

On Mac, it's easiest to install the Happ.macOS.universal.dmg file from GitHub. It works on macOS 13 and newer, on both Apple and Intel processors. The Mac App Store version requires macOS 15, and it's also currently missing from the Russian store.

Happ on Android TV: transferring a subscription without typing

Typing a long link with a remote is painful, and Happ anticipated this. The TV app is the same as the mobile one, installed from Google Play or via an APK file.

  1. Install Happ on your TV from Google Play and open it.
  2. On the main screen, select Web Import. The TV will display a five-digit code.
  3. On your phone or PC, open tv.happ.su, enter the code from your TV screen, paste the subscription link, and send it.
  4. The subscription will appear on the TV. Select a server, connect, and allow it to create a VPN connection.

There is a second method: scanning a QR code from the TV screen using Happ on your phone. Your phone will transfer the subscription over your home network, and if that fails, it will offer to send it over the internet. For Apple TV, there is a separate Happ for TV app, which, unlike the iPhone version, is available in the Russian App Store as of October 30, 2026. We explain what Samsung and LG owners—where Happ cannot be installed—should do in our article on VPNs for TV.

Split tunneling in Happ: how to route banks and local websites directly

Banking apps, Gosuslugi (Russia's public services portal), and marketplaces often react poorly to logins from foreign IP addresses. You don't have to turn off your VPN before every payment: Happ can route some traffic around the tunnel. We explain how this works in general and the different approaches in our article on split tunneling. Happ offers two methods.

By application: Android and PC

On Android, Happ's settings feature a "Per-App Proxy". You can select which apps go through the VPN and let the rest connect directly. Or vice versa: select banks and government services so that only they bypass the tunnel. If you just need to exclude two or three apps, the latter is more convenient. The same app selection is available in the Windows, macOS, and Linux versions.

By website and IP address: all devices, including iPhone

The second method involves routing profiles. A profile is a set of rules defining which websites and addresses to open directly, which to route through the VPN, and which to block. In Happ's settings, open "Routing Rules," select a profile, and enable "Use routing." If your service provided a ready-made profile along with the subscription or as a separate link, Happ will add it automatically. Profiles are tied to the subscription: each subscription has its own set.

Building rules manually only makes sense if you know what you're doing. A poorly configured profile is a common cause for complaints like "the VPN is connected, but nothing opens." iOS doesn't allow selecting individual apps, so this is the only method that works on iPhone.

Split tunneling doesn't always help. If a banking app detects that a VPN is active on the phone, simply excluding it from the tunnel won't convince it, and you'll have to turn off the VPN entirely during the transaction.

Why Happ isn't working: timeouts, "Host not found," and other errors

Most often, the problem lies with the subscription, a specific server, or your network. Below are the most frequently searched messages and what they mean. The meanings of the first three errors are taken from Happ's help section.

Common Happ errors
What you seeWhat it meansWhat to do
"Clipboard is empty"Happ couldn't find copied text in the clipboardCopy the link again and paste it immediately
"Subscription URL is invalid" or "Configuration... is invalid"The link is cut off or contains extra charactersCopy the full link again without spaces or line breaks
Timeout when adding or updating a subscriptionThe server hosting the subscription didn't respond within 9 secondsCheck your internet connection without the VPN, open the subscription link in a browser, try a different network, and try again in a few minutes
Timeout or an error icon instead of a server's pingThere is currently no connection to this server from your networkChoose a different server, update the subscription
"Host not found"The device couldn't resolve the server's IP address from its hostname: DNS didn't respond or the address in the subscription is outdatedUpdate the subscription, check the link, switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data or vice versa
Connected, but websites don't openThe server isn't responding, the subscription has expired, or a routing profile is interferingChange the server, check your payment status, temporarily disable routing
No internet on PC in TUN modeAnother program is conflicting with the Happ tunnel: a second VPN, an antivirus with a firewall, or virtual adaptersClose other VPNs, check if Proxy mode works, update Happ

If none of these apply, run through this checklist in order.

  1. Turn off the VPN and open any website. If it doesn't open, the problem is with your internet, not Happ.
  2. Make sure your subscription is active and paid: if the service stops it, servers usually stop responding.
  3. Update the subscription and try two or three different servers.
  4. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If it works on one network but not the other, the issue is with the network.
  5. Restart Happ and check if a new version is available.
  6. Contact your VPN service's support. Attach a screenshot of the error and specify your device and network: you'll get a faster response.

Happ, Incy, or v2RayTun: which one to choose

All three apps are free, run on Xray, and accept the exact same subscription link. Speed mostly depends on the server and network, so they differ primarily in platform support and convenience.

Happ wins on platform count: phones, PCs (Windows, macOS, Linux), Android TV, and Apple TV. Its PC versions are fully featured, and updates are frequent.

Incy is built primarily for phones and TVs. It features a kill switch that blocks traffic if the tunnel drops, and it can transfer subscriptions to a TV via a QR code or pairing code. The developers themselves call the PC version a pre-alpha. On October 27, 2026, Incy disappeared from the Russian App Store, as reported by Kod Durova; it is still available on Google Play.

v2RayTun is most often installed on Android and is available on Google Play. Apple removed the iPhone version from the Russian App Store back in March 2026.

In the Byte VPN dashboard, Incy is recommended for phones, while Happ is recommended for macOS and Android TV. However, your subscription link works in Happ on any device, so if you already have Happ installed, there's no need to switch. If you're choosing a Windows client, compare Happ with Hiddify. We compare seven popular apps in detail in our article on VLESS apps.

Is Happ secure?

The Xray core inside Happ is open-source, but the developers do not publish the code for the app itself: their GitHub repositories only contain compiled builds. We haven't found an independent audit of Happ. Therefore, security has to be judged by indirect signs: how the developers react to reported issues and where you downloaded the app.

In April 2026, Kod Durova reported on a Habr user's research. Happ exposed a service interface for Xray, through which other apps on the phone could discover the server address and connection settings. The developers closed this loophole. A second issue remained unfixed at the time of publication: a local proxy without a password that allowed third-party apps to determine the external IP address. According to the publication, a similar vulnerability exists in other clients, including v2rayNG and Hiddify.

One more detail: by default, Happ transmits your device identifier (HWID) to the subscription server. Services use this, for example, to limit the number of devices per subscription. According to the developers, Happ does not collect data on your network activity.

Therefore, only install Happ using links from happ.su, keep it updated, and don't keep untrusted apps on your phone.

FAQ

Is Happ a VPN or not?

Happ is a client app used to connect to servers via VLESS and other protocols. It has no servers of its own, so it requires a subscription from a VPN service to work.

Where do I get a key or subscription for Happ?

From the VPN service you use: they provide a subscription link in your user dashboard or via a bot. Free keys from Telegram channels belong to unknown people and often stop working without warning.

Is Happ available on PC?

Yes. There are versions for Windows 10 and 11, macOS, and Linux. Installers are hosted on the developer's GitHub, and links to them are gathered on the happ.su website.

What's the difference between Happ and Happ Plus?

These are apps from the same developer, Flyfrog LLC. Happ Plus, and later Happ Lite, were released as separate listings in the Russian App Store after the main version was removed. As of October 30, 2026, none of them are available in the Russian App Store.

What does a timeout mean in Happ?

If the error occurs while adding or updating a subscription, the subscription server didn't respond within 9 seconds: check your internet and try again later. A timeout instead of a ping next to a server means there's no connection to it, and you should pick a different one.

How do I set up split tunneling in Happ?

On Android and PC, you can select which apps bypass the VPN. On all devices, including iPhone, you can use profiles in the "Routing Rules" section. Reconnect after making changes.
